Talking to Your Doctor About CBD

Quick Facts

  • Most doctors are open to discussing CBD, even if they can't prescribe it
  • Pharmacists are often the most knowledgeable about CBD drug interactions
  • You should never start CBD without telling your doctor if you take prescriptions
  • Bring a specific product and its lab results to the conversation
  • Your doctor's main concern will likely be drug interactions, not CBD itself

Many seniors want to try CBD but hesitate to bring it up with their doctor. Some worry their doctor will dismiss the idea. Others aren't sure what to say. The good news is that the conversation is usually easier than people expect, and it's one you really should have before starting, especially if you take any prescription medications.

It's also worth knowing that some Medicare Advantage plans now cover qualifying CBD products, so your healthcare team may already be more familiar with it than you'd think.

Why You Should Tell Your Doctor

This isn't about asking permission. It's about safety. CBD can interact with many common prescription medications by affecting how the liver processes them. If your doctor doesn't know you're using CBD, they can't watch for interaction signs or adjust your medication doses accordingly.

Think of it this way: if you started a new supplement that could affect your blood thinner's effectiveness, you'd want your doctor to know. CBD is in that same category. Our CBD drug interactions guide explains the specific risks in more detail.

Who to Talk To First: Doctor or Pharmacist?

Both, ideally. But if you have to choose one to start with, your pharmacist is often the better first call for a drug interaction review. Pharmacists are specifically trained in drug interactions and generally have more time to go through your full medication list than a doctor does during a brief office visit.

Your pharmacist can run your medication list against CBD's known interaction profile and flag any concerns before you bring the conversation to your doctor. Many pharmacy chains offer this kind of medication review for free.

What to Bring to the Appointment

Coming prepared makes the conversation much more productive. Bring:

  • Your complete medication list, including all prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements
  • The specific product you're considering, including its label and ideally a link to or printed copy of its Certificate of Analysis (COA)
  • The dose you're thinking of starting with
  • Your specific goals: are you trying CBD for sleep, pain, anxiety, or something else?
  • Any relevant research you've read, though this is optional

Edify makes this easy. All of our lab results are publicly available, so you can print or pull up the COA for any product during your appointment.

Conversation Starters That Work

Not sure how to open the conversation? Here are some straightforward ways to bring it up:

"I've been reading about CBD for [pain/sleep/anxiety], and I wanted to ask you about it before I try it. I take [list medications], so I'm especially curious about whether there are any interactions I should know about."
"My [friend/family member] has been using CBD and finding it helpful for [symptom]. I'm curious if it might be appropriate for me, given my current medications."
"I've looked into CBD and I understand it can interact with blood thinners. I'd like your input on whether it's safe for me to try, and what to watch for if I do."

What Your Doctor Might Say

Doctors' responses to CBD questions vary. Here's what you might encounter and how to respond:

"I can't recommend it because it's not FDA-approved."

This is technically accurate for most CBD supplements. You can acknowledge this and ask for guidance on safe use rather than a recommendation: "I understand. I'm not asking you to prescribe it. I just want to know if it's safe to try given my medications, and what I should monitor."

"I don't know much about CBD."

This is honest, and not uncommon. Ask to be referred to a pharmacist for a drug interaction review, or ask if they can note it in your chart so it's on record.

"There's not enough research on it."

This is partly true. You can say: "I understand the research is still developing. I'd like to try a low dose and see how I respond, with your knowledge, so I can report back on how I'm doing." Most doctors will be receptive to this approach.

"That sounds fine, but watch for [specific concern]."

This is the ideal response. Take note of what they flag, and follow up.

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

  • Do any of my current medications interact with CBD in a way I should be concerned about?
  • Should I get any lab work done before starting, or to monitor effects?
  • What symptoms or signs should I watch for that would indicate a problem?
  • Is there a dose range you'd be comfortable with me starting at?
  • Should I let you know how it's going at my next visit?

After the Conversation

Once you've talked to your doctor, document it. Note the date, what was discussed, and any specific recommendations. If your doctor said to monitor something specific (like INR for warfarin users), make sure that monitoring happens.

When you start CBD, start low and go slow. See our CBD dosage guide for seniors for specific starting point recommendations. And if anything changes in how you feel or how your medications seem to be working, contact your doctor promptly.

A Note on Informed Decisions

You have the right to make your own health decisions. Talking to your doctor is about doing that safely, not about getting permission. A good doctor will respect your autonomy, help you understand the risks and benefits, and partner with you to use CBD as safely as possible.

To learn more about safe use, see our full guide at CBD for Seniors: A Complete Guide. If you're ready to start, our Relieve CBD & CBG Tincture (THC-Free) offers the precise dosing that makes this kind of careful, monitored start-up approach easy. Our products are Seed-to-Self, USDA organic, and nano-enhanced for better absorption at lower doses.
